It has been more than two years since our friend and colleague, Los Angeles Firefighter/Paramedic David Pass lost his life in an off-duty motorcycle collision caused by an errant motorist.
Our friends at KABC-TV in Los Angeles have been kind enough to produce and broadcast a brief video that highlights the continuing search for the driver of a Chevrolet Impala that fled the intersection of LaBrea Avenue and Centinela Avenue in Inglewood, California on July 21, 2007 - without so much as stopping to aid the dying father of four.
We wish to thank KABC-TV and the Inglewood Police Department for their diligence in bringing this motorist to justice. If you have information about this incident, we ask you to call investigators at (888) 41-CRIME.

Such a tragedy and hopefully people remember that it is NEVER to late to call the investigators and give any information that might help bring justice for the family and for all who were touched by this brave man.
Mike,
Thank you for your kind and important words. With friends such as you, the men and women of the Los Angeles Fire Department are honored to say that they never walk alone.
Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,

As an extended family member and friend of David's for over thirty years, I can say that David was the ultimate fire fighter and would do anything within his power to aid family, friends, and strangers on the job and off. The person responsible for this tragedy has said something to someone, do the right thing and call (888) 41-CRIME.
This was hilarious! He swerved to avoid her. There was no contact with the vehicle. There is no crime. It's disgusting that if he hadn't been a paramedic, this wouldn't be news.
Anonymous 9:20, though impolite, your comments are being included by exception to allow clarity of our purpose and the law.
-------------------
Anonymous 9:20,
There are many blogs and websites across the globe devoted to those who senselessly lost their lives in actual or near-miss traffic collisions.
Our Brother David would be the first to tell you he was no more special than those he routinely came to aid. What he was however, was a beloved member of our LAFD family - and this is our blog.
While we welcome you to hold a personal opinion - and the LAFD has not officially referred to this as a "crime", the State of California is profoundly clear that it is the duty of every driver involved in an accident to stop at the scene.
Lest it be mistaken, the sole purpose of our sharing David's story was not to evoke empathy or privilege, but rather to make certain the community at-large understands the tremendous human toll of traffic collisions, and their legal responsibility if involved.
What takes place after that, be it an admonishment, penalty - or even a formal pardon or reverse judgement, is purely a matter for the justice system.
In closing...
Had you left off the words "hilarious" and "disgusting", your comments may have carried greater weight and been more worthy of discourse.
KINDLY NOTE: Future comments by participants in this thread that are bellicose, impolite or an ad hominem attack will not be published. Should you wish to express an off-topic or impolite message you can always use this link.
Sincerely,

Mr. Humphrey/LAFD, thank you for your repudiation of the insensitive and disrespectful comments posted by the person listed as "Anonymous." There was nothing "hilarious" about what happened to my brother at all. Furthermore, it was criminal and unconscionable that the person responsible for his death would flee the scene and leave him to die in the middle of the street. Instead of rendering aid, witnesses testified that this person stopped, got out of the car, checked for damage to the car, and then drove away! According to the police and the law, this resulted in a felony crime, and the person who is responsible should be held accountable. I should hope that whoever this "anonymous" person is, he/she should be more cognizant of the law and respectful of the feelings of friends and family, rather than making unneccessary, erroneous and repugnant comments. I urge anyone who may have any information that will help this case, to please call the police.
Dear Mr. Humphrey, You sir are a class act. I thank you for your response to "Anonymous said, November 15, 2009 9:20 am." What a cowardly and insensitive comment by "anonymous." Such comments are unworthy and unwarranted of this blog and David Pass.
