We have a broadcast text message for the Amber Alert System. It is free to subscribe and free to receive Text messages about children in peril.
How difficult would it be to have persons subscribe by street address to a system that would send a Text message of an advisory evacuation and of a required evacuation. with the saturation of Text-enabled cell phones, this would send those critical messages directly to the parties who need to know. Sure - go ahead and use the available media and this website; but, with the Text Alert System, the Fire department can be sure that those who need to know do know - even should they be driving in their car, listening to a CD.

Can you post the school closures here too? Like ABC7 is doing: http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/feature?section=news/local&id=6445656
Also, at some point, it seems like you should put the fire perimeter online too (even if it is approximate).

Can you post information on the Sesnon Fire now? It's over 3 hours old now. It seems like someone should have gotten to this by now.
This is extremely powerful information (in the mashup).

The RED fire zone does not include upper and lower Kagel Canyon. Does this mean that we can go back?

Hi The map is not updated because we were given mandatory evacuation orders around 3 this afternoon at 15455 Glenoaks and I understand the Yarnell area too. How do we find out when we will be allowed back in? I am not at a shelter I am at a friends house and would sure like up to date info about the evacuations.
I know you are really busy and I appreciate what you are doing but I also want to know what is happening and if and when I can go home.

The map above is not up to date. A more current map is available at http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&gl=us&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=101000290928271643997.000459120967cf8f1403e

The fire has reached the foothills above Polk.

The 210 looks like it is open but the ramps at Yarnell, Glenoaks and Polk are still closed (3:30am Tuesday). They could probably be opened if the Traffic Dept. would move their roadblocks 200' north.

My family was evacuated dut to the Marek fire Mon afternoon 10/13/08.
Is it possible to get an update off the evacuation area by street.
They live on Aldergrove St in Sylmar.
Or is there a number to call to find if there is still an evacuation order for Aldergrove St. in Sylmar.
Thank You so much for doing such a terrific job in fighting these fires.
