On Sunday, April 27, 2008 at 5:20 PM, 15 Companies of Los Angeles Firefighters, 3 LAFD Rescue Ambulances, 3 Arson Units, 2 Urban Search and Rescue Units, 1 Hazardous Materials Team, 1 EMS Battalion Captain, 2 Battalion Chief Officer Command Teams and 1 Division Chief Officer Command Team, a total of 103 Los Angeles Fire Department personnel under the direction of Battalion Chief Christopher Kawai, responded to a Greater Alarm Structure Fire at 6263 Leland Way in Hollywood.
Firefighters arrived quickly at the popular 'Off Vine' restaurant to find nearly 90 dinner patrons and staff safely evacuated from the 1,652 square-foot building, a century old one-story craftsman style residence with a modern attic conversion to form a two-story restaurant.
With much of the restaurant well-involved with fire, Firefighters mounted a bold offense against the stubborn flames that had taken hold of many recesses within the much-remodeled structure. The progressive fire attack, combined with strategic vertical ventilation, allowed Firefighters to confine the damage and extinguish the flames in just 34 minutes.
While fiercely fighting the blaze, one Firefighter sustained 2nd degree facial burns, while another suffered an ankle injury. Both men were taken to area hospitals where they were treated and released.
No other injuries were reported.
Dozens of Firefighters labored intensely during and after the fire to salvage the restaurant's many valuables, including a wine collection and business records contained in the heavily damaged building's half-basement.
Loss from the fire has been estimated at $450,000 ($300,000 structure & $150,000 contents). The cause of the swift-moving blaze was determined to be electrical in nature.

I worked at Off Vine, and I just wanted to thank the brave firefighters who worked so hard and so bravely to extinguish my restaurant. We all loved that house so much. Thank you for responding so quickly and putting your own well-being on the line for the sake of our little family. You are truly amazing people.
Anonymous 1:34,
Thanks for your kind words. They mean more than you know. We're deeply pleased that you and your coworkers, as well as the patrons, were able to escape without physical harm.
Neighborhood Firefighters grieve the (hopefully temporary) loss of the energy that Off Vine and its employees brought to our community, and were heartened to hear the business owner so adamant in his pledge to rebuild.
Please rest assured that members of your LAFD will be with him and you every step of the way, as we all eagerly anticipate the return of what has clearly become a Hollywood establishment.
In closing, I hope this swift-moving fire will give all of our readers a chance to understand why Neighborhood Firefighters and Fire Inspectors at the LAFD are so adamant about fire safety at places where people gather.
Yes, we often hear the frustrated mutters of business owners and patrons when we make our safety rounds, but it is infernos such as the one at Off Vine that spur on our efforts to see that every possible fire is prevented, and that should the unthinkable happen, everyone gets out alive.
Whether you are an employee or a guest, please always keep an eye open for *at least* two exits from every room you occupy. Often the safest and quickest exit is NOT the way you entered!
Again, thanks for your kind words, and please do not hesitate to contact the crew at nearby Fire Station 27 if they can be of assistance.
Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
Brian Humphrey

To the amazing staff of Off Vine and the remarkable members of the LAFD, thank you. As a former staff member of just over 5 years, that restaurant holds a special place in my heart. I was only a teenage bussboy, and it was my first job, but my memories are overly fond to say the least.
Kudos to the LAFD, and come back soon Off Vine!
