HOLLYWOOD, Aug. 2, 2007 (KABC-TV) - Our Cool Kid is a young man who has found his calling and a way to turn his life around in a visit to a local fire station.

At Los Angeles Fire Department Station 27, Cool Kid Joe Montoya has joined the Explorer Program. He has found that the hands-on training feeds his need for knowledge.

"You never stop learning in this job; you always learn something new. Even the oldest guy here still learns some things every day. I love learning, so this is the perfect job for me: Learn, learn, learn," says Joe Montoya... (more...)

We're very proud of you Joe, and thank KABC-TV for sharing your inspiring story.

I am very proud of Joe for his outstanding work as an Explorer and I am very thankful to all those men (firefighters) who work with the Explorers and set great examples for them, especially Mr. Dave Fabella for being a friend and a mentor to Joe. Thank you. Joe's mother, Sandy.

Sandy,

Thanks for your kind words, and especially for raising such a fine young man.

While others might have seen Joe as merely another teenager in the neighborhood, we saw a tremendous asset to society the moment we laid eyes on him.

Your confidence in Dave Fabela and his colleagues at Fire Station 27 could not be more wisely invested.

Engineer Fabela is legendary (and we don't use that term lightly) for his commitment to the community, and he has certainly found a wonderful protege in Joe.

In closing, please know that Joe's presence is energizing to the men and women of our Department, and that whatever we may offer to him, he returns to us a hundred-fold.

Please accept our warmest wishes and again thanks, for bringing Joe into our lives.

Respectfully Yours in Safety and Service,
