California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has issued the following proclamation for Wildfire Awareness Week in the State of California...
"Wildfire season is fast approaching, and it is imperative that we do all we can to be prepared. Each year, California experiences thousands of fires that destroy homes and businesses and often burn hundreds of thousands of acres of precious timber and grasslands. These fires release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, which negatively affects our environment and quality-of-life. And all too often, these fires kill our residents and the heroic firefighters who put their lives on the line to protect us from danger.
Ninety percent of California's wildfires are caused by people, either by accident or intentionally, meaning that most are preventable. This is a call to action for all of us. We have the responsibility of doing everything we can to prevent wildfires in our state.
I urge all Californians to recognize the high risk of wildfires and to take every necessary precaution to protect themselves, their property and our environment - not just during Wildfire Awareness Week, but every week. Our state's firefighters are working hard to do everything they can, but they also need the help of all residents. If we do our part, we can minimize the impact of future tragedies and save lives.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim May 6-12, 2007 as 'Wildfire Awareness Week' in California.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this 30th day of April 2007."
